    Leland E. Byrd

    1996 Outstanding Alumni Award

    Leland E. Byrd was inducted into the inaugural College of Applied Human Sciences Hall of Fame in 2025. He was previously inducted into the College of Physical Activity and Sport Sciences Hall of Fame in 1989 and was named CPASS Outstanding Alumnus in 1996.

    Born on April 8, 1929, Byrd graduated from Matoaka High School in 1944 before enrolling at West Virginia University that fall. From 1944-48, he earned distinction as both an honor student and an All-American basketball player. He completed his Bachelor of Science in physical education in 1948, a Master of Science in 1950, and a doctorate in 1967—all from WVU.

    Forrest G. Clark was inducted into the inaugural College of Applied Human Sciences Hall of Fame in 2025. He was previously inducted into the College of Physical Activity and Sport Sciences Hall of Fame in 1989.

    Born in Hemlock, W.Va., Clark was an all-state football player at Buckhannon High School and graduated in 1925. He continued his education at Alderson-Broaddus College, lettering in football, basketball, and baseball. Before transferring to West Virginia University, he taught and coached at Adolf High School in Upshur County. At WVU, he played baseball for the Mountaineers and earned a Bachelor of Science degree in zoology from the College of Education in 1930, with teaching fields in physical education and social studies.

    Byron Gibson was inducted into the inaugural College of Applied Human Sciences Hall of Fame in 2025. He was previously inducted into the College of Physical Activity and Sport Sciences Hall of Fame in 1989.

    A native of Clarksburg, W.Va., Gibson was a multi-sport athlete and earned a Bachelor of Science degree in business administration from Salem College. He was named to the West Virginia All-Conference Basketball Team in 1955 and 1956 and won the West Virginia Collegiate Tennis Championship in 1956. Following graduation, he served as a recreation instructor and coach at Salem College.

    Charles L. Howley

    2000 Outstanding Alumni Award

    Charles “Chuck” Howley was inducted into the inaugural College of Applied Human Sciences Hall of Fame in 2025. He was previously inducted into the College of Physical Activity and Sport Sciences Hall of Fame in 1989 and was named CPASS Outstanding Alumnus in 2000.

    Born on June 28, 1936, in Wheeling, W.Va., Howley grew up in Warwood and attended Warwood High School. A standout multi-sport athlete, he lettered in football, basketball, and baseball and earned first team all-state honors in football as well as recognition in the Ohio Valley Athletic Conference.

    C. Everett Marcum was inducted into the inaugural College of Applied Human Sciences Hall of Fame in 2025. He was previously inducted into the College of Physical Activity and Sport Sciences Hall of Fame in 1989.

    Born on February 2, 1921, in Ohio, Marcum earned both his master’s and Doctor of Education degrees from Indiana University. Early in his career, he taught and coached in Ohio’s secondary schools, later holding faculty positions at Indiana University, the University of Bridgeport, Middle Tennessee State University, and Indiana State University between 1959 and 1969.

    Jack Roberts was inducted into the inaugural College of Applied Human Sciences Hall of Fame in 2025. He was previously inducted into the College of Physical Activity and Sport Sciences Hall of Fame in 1989.

    A native of Morgantown, W.Va., Roberts graduated from Morgantown High School before earning both a Bachelor of Science and a Master of Science degree in Physical Education from West Virginia University by 1941. Upon graduation, he began a lifelong career in education by joining Arthur B. Clyde at Morgantown High School.

    Harriet G. Williams

    1989 Outstanding Alumni Award

    Harriet Williams was inducted into the inaugural College of Applied Human Sciences Hall of Fame in 2025. She was previously inducted into the College of Physical Activity and Sport Sciences Hall of Fame in 1989 and was named Outstanding Alumna the same year. 

    Williams, a native of Clarksburg, W.Va., enrolled at West Virginia University in 1956 to study physical education and biology, graduating with honors in 1960. In 1968, she completed a Ph.D. in motor development at the University of Wisconsin–Madison.
