J. Winona Vannoy
J. Winona Vannoy was inducted into the inaugural College of Applied Human Sciences Hall of Fame in 2025. She was previously inducted into the College of Physical Activity and Sport Sciences Hall of Fame in 1989.
Vannoy completed business and accounting training in Huntington, W.Va., in 1950 before enrolling at West Virginia University. She graduated with honors in 1964 with a Bachelor of Science degree in physical education and biological science. As a student, she was a member of several academic honoraries, including Kappa Delta Pi.
Following the completion of a master’s degree in physical education from WVU, Vannoy began her professional career as a high school teacher in Mentor, Ohio. In 1968, she joined the faculty at Kent State University, where she served for 21 years in a variety of roles, including athletic director for women, director of intramurals, and director of campus recreation. Vannoy held leadership positions in state, regional, and national professional organizations. She contributed to books and journals and frequently presented at professional conferences. In addition to her career in education and athletics, she was actively engaged in community service.
