David E. Tork
David Tork was inducted into the inaugural College of Applied Human Sciences Hall of Fame in 2025. He was previously inducted into the College of Physical Activity and Sport Sciences Hall of Fame in 1989.
A native of Fairmont, W.Va., Tork enrolled at West Virginia University in 1954 and earned a bachelor of science degree in physical education. During his undergraduate years, Tork was a standout athlete, earning varsity letters in both gymnastics and track. He gained national recognition for his pole vaulting ability, which would later earn him international acclaim.
After graduation, Tork served as an officer in the United States Marine Corps for four years. During this time, he continued competing in pole vault and went on to set a world record in the event.
Tork’s professional career centered on development and public relations. He held positions with institutions such as West Virginia University, Johns Hopkins University, Washington State University, the U.S. Olympic Center, and the South Coast Medical Center in California. His career began at WVU, where he spent five years as Director of Annual Giving, leading programs that earned two national awards for excellence.
In 1962, during West Virginia’s centennial year, Tork returned to his home state to serve as Director of Information within the State Commerce Department in Charleston. Later, as Vice President for Development at South Coast Medical Center, he earned national recognition for leading a top-rated capital campaign.
In 1987, Tork returned to West Virginia as Executive Director of Wheeling 2000, an economic development initiative. His leadership helped position the WVU School of Physical Education as a contributing partner in the project.
Tork was inducted into the West Virginia Sports Hall of Fame in 1981. He is the second member of his family to be inducted into the School’s Hall of Fame, following his father, Patrick Tork, who was honored in 1988.
