C. Everett Marcum

C. Everett Marcum was inducted into the inaugural College of Applied Human Sciences Hall of Fame in 2025. He was previously inducted into the College of Physical Activity and Sport Sciences Hall of Fame in 1989.

Born on February 2, 1921, in Ohio, Marcum earned both his master’s and Doctor of Education degrees from Indiana University. Early in his career, he taught and coached in Ohio’s secondary schools, later holding faculty positions at Indiana University, the University of Bridgeport, Middle Tennessee State University, and Indiana State University between 1959 and 1969.

Marcum joined West Virginia University in 1969 as Chair of the Department of Safety Studies, a position he held until his retirement in 1987. Under his leadership, the program shifted its emphasis from safety education to safety management, with a focus on graduate education and professional preparation. He was instrumental in building a nationally recognized program by assembling a strong faculty and aligning the curriculum with workforce needs in business and industry.

Following his retirement, Marcum remained actively engaged as Professor Emeritus, continuing to teach part-time and mentor graduate students. The national and international reputation of WVU’s graduate program in safety was widely attributed to his vision and leadership.

A prolific scholar, Marcum authored three textbooks, published more than 40 articles, and delivered numerous professional presentations. He held leadership positions at the state, regional, and national levels in organizations including the American Alliance for Health, Physical Education, Recreation, and Dance; the National Safety Management Society; and the National Safety Council. He also served as president of the West Virginia Association for Health, Physical Education, Recreation, and Dance (WVAHPERD).

Marcum received numerous professional honors, including the Ray O. Duncan Award from WVAHPERD and the Safety Management Innovator of the Decade Award from the American Alliance for Safety and Management.

Marcum passed away on August 25, 1991.
