    Horace E. Belmear, Jr.

    2002 Outstanding Alumni Award

    Horace E. Belmear Jr. was inducted into the inaugural College of Applied Human Sciences Hall of Fame in the fall of 2025. He was previously inducted into the College of Physical Activity and Sport Sciences Hall of Fame in 1993 and recognized as an Outstanding Alumnus in 2002.

    A native of Bardstown, Ky., Belmear graduated from Central High School in 1936 and earned his undergraduate degree from West Virginia State College in 1940. He later returned to West Virginia University, where he earned a master’s degree in physical education in 1952.

    Nicholas Cavallaro was inducted into the inaugural College of Applied Human Sciences Hall of Fame in the fall of 2025. He was previously inducted into the College of Physical Activity and Sport Sciences Hall of Fame in 1993.

    A Morgantown native and 1943 graduate of Morgantown High School, Cavallaro served nearly three years in the U.S. Naval Air Force during World War II before enrolling at West Virginia University. He earned a bachelor’s degree in physical education in 1954 and began a distinguished teaching and coaching career that spanned more than four decades.

    Carl W. Flanagan was inducted into the inaugural College of Applied Human Sciences Hall of Fame in the fall of 2025. He was previously inducted into the College of Physical Activity and Sport Sciences Hall of Fame in 1993.

    A native of Parsons, W.Va., Carl Flanagan earned both his bachelor’s (1940) and master’s (1952) degrees in physical education from West Virginia University, where he lettered in both baseball and basketball and received academic honors. As a student, he also served as a park ranger during summers in locations including the Blue Ridge Parkway, Great Smoky Mountains, Yellowstone, and Rocky Mountain National Park. He was recognized with several meritorious awards for his rescue efforts.

    Norman Harris was inducted into the inaugural College of Applied Human Sciences Hall of Fame in the fall of 2025. He was previously inducted into the College of Physical Activity and Sport Sciences Hall of Fame in 1993.

    Harris earned his Bachelor of Science degree in physical education from West Virginia University in 1962. He began his career as a teacher and basketball coach at Lackey High School in Maryland, where his team finished as state runner-up in just his second year.

    2007 Outstanding Alumni Award

    John C. Spiker was inducted into the inaugural College of Applied Human Sciences Hall of Fame in the fall of 2025. He was previously inducted into the College of Physical Activity and Sport Sciences Hall of Fame in 1993 and was recognized as an Outstanding Alumnus in 2007.

    A native of Bruceton Mills, W.Va., Spiker earned his bachelor’s degree in physical education from WVU in 1969. He went on to earn a master’s degree in education from the University of Pittsburgh in 1972, followed by a certificate in physical therapy from the University of Pennsylvania in 1973.
