Biographical Sketch

Dr. Beckmeyer is an Assistant Professor in the area of Youth and Family Science. His responsibilities include teaching courses related to youth development, family experiences and research methodology. Prior to joining the faculty at WVU, Dr. Beckmeyer held a faculty position at Indiana University-Bloomington.

Dr. Beckmeyer’s research focuses on the intersections between family systems, relationship development and well-being during adolescence and emerging adulthood. Dr. Beckmeyer has ongoing research projects focused on (1) how family systems shape adolescent and emerging adult health and well-being, (2) family structure diversity and healthcare experiences, (3) resiliency in post-divorce families, and (4) romantic development and sexual development during adolescence and emerging adulthood. This research is guided by strengths-based and positive development models, with the broad goal of uncovering what helps adolescents and emerging adults live healthy and happy lives. Dr. Beckmeyer serves as an Assistant Editor for the journal Emerging Adulthood and is a member of the editorial boards of Family Relations and the Journal of Family Communication.

Dr. Beckmeyer earned a PhD in Human Development and Family Studies, with a graduate certificate in Public Health from the University of Missouri. He completed a MS in Criminal Justice and Criminology from the University of Missouri - Kansas City and a BS in Psychology from Truman State University.
