Robert L. "Sam" Huff

Sam Huff was inducted into the inaugural College of Applied Human Sciences Hall of Fame in 2025. He was previously inducted into the College of Physical Activity and Sport Sciences Hall of Fame in 1988 and was named CPASS Outstanding Alumnus in 1997.

Born Robert Lee Huff on October 4, 1934, in Edna Gas, W.Va., “Sam” Huff began his football career at Farmington High School. He attended West Virginia University from 1952 to 1956, majoring in physical education. A four-year letterman, Huff started as a guard his sophomore year and later transitioned to tackle. During his collegiate career, he helped lead the Mountaineers to a 31–7 record and a berth in the 1954 Sugar Bowl. As a senior co-captain in 1955, he earned All-America honors from NEA Service, Look Magazine, Jet Magazine, and NBC-TV.

Following his standout college career, Huff was selected to play in the North-South Game, the Senior Bowl, and the College Football All-Star Game. He was drafted in the third round by the New York Giants, where he quickly gained national recognition for his physical style of play. Huff spent eight seasons with the Giants before joining the Washington football team in 1964. His impact was immediate—Washington’s defense ranked second in the NFL in 1965, and he remained a key contributor throughout his career. 

Following his playing career, Huff began a broadcasting career in 1975 for the Washington football team. He spent 38 years and broadcast 770 games as an analyst before retiring in 2013. In addition to his sports career, Huff also served as Vice President for Special Markets for Marriott Hotels and Resorts, a role he held beginning in 1971.

Huff’s career honors include induction into the WVU Football Hall of Fame, the College Football Hall of Fame, the Pro Football Hall of Fame, and the West Virginia Sports Hall of Fame. He remains among the most recognized football players in West Virginia University history.

Huff was the father of three children: Robert Lee "Sam" Huff, Jr., Catherine Ann, and J.D. He passed away on November 13, 2021.
