Carl P. Schott
1988 Hall of Fame Inductee
Carl P. Schott was inducted into the inaugural College of Applied Human Sciences Hall of Fame in 2025. He was previously inducted into the College of Physical Activity and Sport Sciences in 1988.
Schott joined West Virginia University in 1928 from Columbia University to provide administrative leadership for the newly established Division of Physical Education. He was selected as the first chair of the department and played a key role in launching and advancing the University’s undergraduate teacher preparation program in physical education.
Schott maintained a close connection with his students and was known for hosting them in his home alongside his wife. His interest in recreation led to his involvement in the development of the Chestnut Ridge Recreation Area. Under his leadership, the University’s physical training program evolved into a formal academic division offering both undergraduate and graduate degree programs. The first degrees were awarded in 1930 and 1936. His leadership also contributed to the growth of athletics at WVU.
In 1937, the Division of Physical Education was reorganized as the School of Physical Education and Athletics, with Alden W. Thompson appointed as its first dean. Schott’s early contributions laid the foundation for the School’s future growth and academic success. He left WVU in 1938 to become the dean of the Department of Athletics and Physical Education at Penn State University, where he served in the position until 1952.
