Ray O. Duncan was inducted into the inaugural College of Applied Human Sciences Hall of Fame in the fall of 2025. He was previously inducted into the College of Physical Activity and Sport Sciences Hall of Fame in 1988.

A graduate from the University of Illinois where he earned his Ph.D and LL.D., he became the fourth dean of the School of Physical Education at WVU in 1952. Working alongside President Stewart and Director Brown, Duncan played a pivotal role in elevating the school's reputation and establishing it as a leader in higher education. His national influence included two terms as president of AAHPERD (1956–58), service as president of WVAHPER, and leadership as chair of the Athletic Council.

His years as dean were marked by continuity in faculty and a commitment to academic and professional advancement. Duncan authored scholarly articles, including “Quo Vadis” in Quest, and contributed to publications such as Administration of Health, Physical Education, Recreation, and Athletics

Highly regarded by his students and colleagues, Duncan was an exceptional educator and a champion for the integration of physical education and athletics. Within the School of Physical Education, Recreation and Safety, his teaching focused on organization and administration.

Duncan’s legacy is honored through the Ray O. Duncan Award—the highest award presented by the West Virginia Association for Health, Physical Education, Recreation, and Dance—for outstanding leadership in service, research, teaching, and administration. His contributions to WVU are also commemorated through the Ray O. Duncan Library, located in the Coliseum.

Duncan passed away on July 24, 1967.
