Charles Peter Yost

Charles Peter Yost was inducted into the inaugural College of Applied Human Sciences Hall of Fame in 2025. He was previously inducted into the College of Physical Activity and Sport Sciences Hall of Fame in 1988 and was the first recipient of its Outstanding Alumnus Award that same year.

Born in January 1922, Yost earned a Bachelor of Science degree from West Virginia University in 1943 and a Master of Science degree in physical education in 1946. Known to friends and colleagues as “Pete,” he served on the WVU faculty for 33 years. During his career, he held numerous leadership roles, including professor, chair of the Department of Safety Studies, and dean.

Yost served as dean of the School from 1969 to 1979, a period marked by significant growth and transformation. Under his leadership, the School underwent a major reorganization, expanded its faculty in specialized areas, modernized academic curricula, and broadened career pathways in physical education. His tenure also coincided with the completion of key athletic facilities, including the WVU Coliseum, Natatorium, and Shell Building.

An esteemed leader in the profession, Yost served as president of both state and district professional organizations and as vice president of a national organization. He received Honor Awards from each of these bodies in recognition of his excellence in professional service. He was widely regarded as a trusted contributor to state, district, and national professional organizations.

In addition to his leadership and service, Yost authored 53 publicataions and delivered numerous professional presentations during his career.

Yost passed away on October 21, 1990. He was survived by his two sons, Stephen and Scott.
