John Semon was inducted into the inaugural College of Applied Human Sciences Hall of Fame in 2025. He was previously inducted into the College of Physical Activity and Sport Sciences Hall of Fame in 1988.
Born in October 1916, Semon earned both his Bachelor of Science (1938) and Master of Science (1946) degrees in physical education from West Virginia University. He began his career teaching in Monongalia County public schools before joining the University as Director of Intramurals in 1943, a position he held until 1956.
Semon later served as Chair of the Department of Physical Education for Men and, alongside Wincie Ann Carruth, led the undergraduate degree programs in physical education that prepared both elementary and secondary school teachers. Throughout his career, he held a variety of leadership roles, including Assistant Dean, Acting Dean, and advisor, while continuing to teach physical education courses.
Widely recognized across the state for his expertise in physical education teacher preparation, Semon was also well known as a football and basketball official. In 1972, he was appointed Assistant Dean, a role he held until 1977, followed by one year of service as Acting Dean before retiring in 1978.
Following retirement, Semon remained involved with the University, coaching the men’s golf team on a part-time basis. He was also a member of the first Visiting Committee for the School, which met on January 9, 1982.
In recognition of his contributions, the John Semon Room, located on the second floor of the WVU Coliseum, was dedicated in his honor on September 5, 1997, through contributions from his daughter, alumni, and friends of the School.
Semon passed away on December 23, 1993. He was survived by his daughter, Jill.
