William Bingman
2013 Hall of Fame Inductee
William Bingman was inducted into the inaugural College of Applied Human Sciences Hall of Fame in the fall of 2025. He was previously inducted into the College of Education and Human Services Hall of Fame in 2013 and was named the College’s Distinguished Alumnus that same year.
Bingman earned a master’s degree in elementary education from West Virginia University in 1967 and a doctorate in curriculum and instruction in 1972. He spent more than 38 years on the faculty of Frostburg State University in the Department of Educational Professions, where he became a champion for children’s literature and educator preparation.
At Frostburg State, Bingman founded the Children’s Literature Center to enhance the study and promotion of quality literature for young readers. Under his leadership, the Children’s Literature Festival was launched and grew into one of the largest events of its kind on the East Coast. The annual festival has brought together educators, librarians, students, authors, illustrators, and storytellers for over three decades to explore the power of storytelling and literacy.
In addition to his work in children’s literature, Bingman helped establish an exchange program with Mary Immaculate College in Limerick, Ireland, fostering international collaboration in teacher education.
As professor emeritus at Frostburg State, Bingman remained active in academic and literary circles, advocating for children’s literature and advancing literacy education.
