William Alsop
William Alsop was inducted into the College of Applied Human Sciences Hall of Fame in the fall of 2025. He was previously inducted into the College of Physical Activity and Sport Sciences Hall of Fame in 2008.
Alsop earned a bachelor’s degree from Texas A&M University–Corpus Christi in 1962 and master’s (1967) and doctoral (1972) degrees in physical education from West Virginia University. He began his career as an instructor at Takoma Junior High School in Montgomery County, Md.
He served on the faculty of the WVU School of Physical Education for more than 30 years, including roles as associate professor, coordinator of Graduate Studies, chair of the Department of Sport and Exercise Studies, chair of the Division of Physical Education and Sport Studies, and program coordinator of sport management. He retired and was named associate professor emeritus in 2002.
Alsop founded WVU’s sport management program, which achieved national recognition, and contributed to the formation of the College’s Visiting Committee. His university service included the Graduate Studies Advisory Committee, Graduate Curriculum Committee, Hearing Committee (chair), and the Planning and Executive Council.
He served on committees of the American Alliance for Health, Physical Education, Recreation and Dance (AAHPERD), including the Board of Directors and as vice president for the Midwest District. He was an early contributor to the North American Society for Sport Management, serving as membership chair. With colleague Andrew C. Ostrow, Alsop founded Fitness Information Technology (FiT) in 1984 and later donated the company’s assets to CPASS to establish the International Center for Performance Excellence.
His recognitions include the West Virginia Association for Health, Physical Education, Recreation and Dance Honor Award (1982) and the Ray O. Duncan Award for Distinguished Service (1994). He authored publications and delivered professional presentations in sport, teaching, and coaching.
