George Henshaw
George Henshaw was inducted into the College of Applied Human Sciences Hall of Fame in the fall of 2025. He was previously inducted into the College of Physical Activity and Sport Sciences Hall of Fame in 2008.
Henshaw earned a bachelor’s degree in physical education from West Virginia University in 1970 and a master’s degree in secondary education from WVU in 1972. As an undergraduate, he started for WVU football for three seasons, served as team co-captain in 1969, earned All-Southern Conference honors, and received the Ira E. Rodgers Award in 1970.
He began his coaching career at WVU (1970–75) as an assistant, working with the defensive line and serving as head freshman coach. He then coached at Florida State University (1976–82) with assignments on both sides of the line and as offensive coordinator, followed by service at the University of Alabama (1983–86) as offensive coordinator and offensive line coach. In 1987, he was head football coach at the University of Tulsa.
Henshaw went on to an extended tenure in the National Football League, coaching with the Denver Broncos (1988–92), New York Giants (1993–96), Tennessee Oilers/Titans, and New Orleans Saints in roles that included offensive coordinator and assistant head coach. Over his college and professional career, he coached in nine college bowl games, two Super Bowls, and two Pro Bowls.
His professional affiliations include the American Football Coaches Association and the National Football League Coaches Association. His honors include induction into the WVU Sports Hall of Fame (2006) and selection to WVU’s All-Decade football team.
