William C. "Wood" McCue

William C. “Wood” McCue was inducted into the inaugural College of Applied Human Sciences Hall of Fame in 2025. He was previously inducted into the College of Physical Activity and Sport Sciences Hall of Fame.

A Lewisburg, W.Va., native, McCue earned a Bachelor of Science from West Virginia University in 1955; a certificate in physical therapy from the Medical College of Virginia in 1956; a Master of Public Health from the University of Michigan in 1962; and a master’s degree in city planning from the University of Cincinnati in 1968. As a WVU undergraduate, he served as a student athletic trainer for football and men’s basketball under head athletic trainer Whitey Gwynne.

McCue’s early career included service as a U.S. Army physical therapist at Martin Army Hospital, Fort Benning, with additional postgraduate work at Georgia Warm Springs Rehabilitation Center and Duke Hospital. He later directed physical therapy at Rockingham Memorial Hospital in Harrisonburg, Va., before moving into health planning. In that field, he served as chair of the board of the American Health Planning Association and as a member of the Governing Council of the American Public Health Association.

Returning to Lewisburg in 1980, McCue founded a private physical therapy practice and began long-term service as athletic trainer at Greenbrier East High School. He remained active in clinical practice, health planning, and community service throughout his career. McCue passed away in 2012.
