Jacquelyn Cuneen
Jacquelyn Cuneen was inducted into the inaugural College of Applied Human Sciences Hall of Fame in 2025. She was previously inducted into the College of Physical Activity and Sport Sciences Hall of Fame in 2011.
Cuneen earned an undergraduate degree from Ohio Northern University and completed graduate study at the State University of New York College at Cortland. She received an EdD in physical education from West Virginia University in 1988.
A longtime faculty member at Bowling Green State University’s sport management program, Cuneen taught sport and event promotion and supervised field experiences. Her scholarship centers on sport-related advertising and the professional preparation of sport managers, with more than 40 publications in outlets such as the Journal of Sport Management, Sport Marketing Quarterly, Sport Management Education Journal, and the International Journal of Sports Marketing & Sponsorship. She co-authored Sport Management Field Experiences, an early textbook devoted to experiential education in sport management. She was later named Professor Emerita at Bowling Green.
Cuneen is a charter Research Fellow of the North American Society for Sport Management (NASSM) and a charter Scholar of the Ohio Association for Health, Physical Education, Recreation and Dance (OAHPERD). She served as NASSM president (1999–2000) and is the only individual to receive NASSM’s three highest recognitions: the Dr. Earle F. Zeigler Lecture Award (2003), the Dr. Garth Paton Distinguished Service Award (2006), and the Distinguished Sport Management Educator Award (2008). Her editorial service includes co-editing the 2001 Journal of Sport Management special issue “Sport in the New Millennium,” editing a 2004 JOPERD feature on internship best practices, and serving as editor of Sport Marketing Quarterly beginning in 2004 when the journal was affiliated with the Sport Marketing Association. She was named the WVU Sport Management Distinguished Alumna of the Year in 2001.
Before her academic career, she held roles in radio as an account executive, director of women’s programming, and educational correspondent.
