Sara H. Cree
Sara H. Cree was inducted into the inaugural College of Applied Human Sciences Hall of Fame in 2025. She was previously inducted into the College of Physical Activity and Sport Sciences Hall of Fame in 1990.
A native of Oak Grove Farms in Carmichaels, Pa., Cree was born Jan. 11, 1907. She earned a Bachelor of Arts degree in economics from West Virginia University in 1930 and later became the School’s first recipient of a master’s degree in physical education in 1937. She completed a doctoral degree at Penn State University in 1954.
Cree began her career teaching in Wayne, W.Va., and then spent nine years at Farmington High School. In 1940, she joined the faculty at Shepherd College, where she served as chair of the Division of Health and Physical Education for many years. She was a leader in promoting women’s athletics and student engagement through her involvement in the Women’s Athletic Association Council and student organizations like Alpha Sigma Tau.
Throughout her career, Cree was recognized for her service and leadership. Her honors included membership in Kappa Delta Pi and Delta Kappa Gamma, the Distinguished Service Award from Shepherd College, the Honor Award from the West Virginia Association for Health, Physical Education, and Recreation, and the Alpha Sigma Tau National Advisor’s Award for 32 years of dedicated service. In 1975, Shepherd College named its Health and Physical Education building in her honor.
Cree passed away Feb. 28, 2004, at the age of 97.
