Patricia K. Fehl

Patricia K. Fehl was inducted into the inaugural College of Applied Human Sciences Hall of Fame in 2025. She was previously inducted into the College of Physical Activity and Sport Sciences Hall of Fame in 1990.

A native of Cincinnati, Ohio, Fehl was born May 29, 1927. She earned a Bachelor of Science degree from DePauw University in 1949, followed by a master’s degree in 1955 and a doctorate in 1966 from Indiana University. After beginning her career at the Indiana University Laboratory School and then serving with distinction at the University of Cincinnati, she joined West Virginia University in 1973 as chair of the Department of General Physical Education.

Fehl was known as an outstanding teacher, coach, and athletic official, and she led efforts to implement the Lifetime Activities Program and the College’s Basic Instruction Program. She held numerous national and regional leadership roles, including president of the American Association for Leisure and Recreation, the Midwest District, and both the West Virginia and Ohio Parks and Recreation Associations. She also served as vice president of the American Alliance for Health, Physical Education, Recreation and Dance and the West Virginia Association for Health, Physical Education, Recreation and Dance.

Her professional service was recognized with Honor and Merit Awards from multiple organizations. A member of several educational honor societies, including Delta Kappa Gamma, Phi Delta Kappa, and Pi Lambda Theta, Fehl was recognized for both her scholarship and leadership.

Fehl retired in 1989 and returned to her native Cincinnati, where she continued to serve the profession. She passed away July 10, 2012. In 2013, CPASS received a transformative $3.4 million estate gift from Fehl, the largest in its history. Her legacy endures through student scholarships and support for the College’s facilities and mission.
