Course Requirements

General Course Information

Except for majors in Coaching and Performance Science, all students who are completing an internship through the Mountaineer GOAL Program will enroll in one of the following courses at the undergraduate or graduate level.

SM 491: Professional Field Experience

1–18 Hours

Prerequisites: consent from program coordinator
May be repeated up to a maximum of 18 hours.

Prearranged experiential learning program, to be planned, supervised, and evaluated for credit by faculty and field supervisors. Involves temporary placement with public or private enterprise for professional competence development. Please contact Dr. Gary Lhotsky with course specific questions.

SM 685: Internship in Sport Management

1–6 Hours

Sport management on-site working relationship with a sport organization to gain practical hands-on experience in a collegiate athletic organization, professional sport franchise, or variety of sport-related businesses. Please contact Dr. Gary Lhotsky with course specific questions.

Coaching and Performance Science Majors

Those majoring in Coaching and Performance Science are encouraged to consult with program faculty before applying for and accepting an internship through the Mountaineer GOAL Program to make sure that it meets their specific course requirements. Alternatively, internships that are not counted for program credit can be completed for elective credit and counted towards the 120 credits needed for graduation. If being counted for program credit, students will register for one of the following courses:

ACE 458: Internship: Practicum & Data Collection

3 Hours

Prerequisites: ACE 457 with a minimum grade of C-.

The following internship placements can be used to satisfy this course requirement: Strength and Conditioning (Sport Science/Technology)

Practical internship experience preparing training and competition monitoring programs as well as monitoring and collecting sport training and sport performance data using sport technologies. Please contact Dr. Guy Hornsby with course specific questions.

ACE 459: Internship: Practicum & Data Collection

3 Hours

Prerequisites: ACE 458 with a minimum grade of C-.

The following internship placements can be used to satisfy this course requirement: Strength and Conditioning (Sport Science/Technology)

Practical internship experience analyzing training and competition monitoring data and utilizing it for coaching based decisions using sport technologies. Please contact Dr. Guy Hornsby with course specific questions.

ACE 475: Strength and Conditioning Internship

3 Hours

Prerequisites: ACE 469 and ACE 473 and ACE 487 and HN&F 200 with a minimum grade of C- in all.
The following internship placements can be used to satisfy this course requirement: Strength and Conditioning (Football), Strength and Conditioning (Sport Science/Technology)

Prearranged experiential learning program, to be planned, supervised, and evaluated for credit by faculty and field supervisors in strength and conditioning environment. Involves temporary placement with public or private enterprise for professional competence development. Please contact Dr. Guy Hornsby with course specific questions.

ACE 491: Professional Field Experience

1–6 Hours

Prerequisites: consent from program coordinator

May be repeated up to a maximum of 18 hours.

The following internship placements can be used to satisfy this course requirement: Baseball, Football (Student Assistant), Football (Video), Men’s Basketball, Strength and Conditioning (Sport Science/Technology), Swimming, Volleyball (Technical Assistant), Women’s Soccer

ACE 585: Coaching Internship

1–6 Hours

The following internship placements can be used to satisfy this course requirement: Baseball, Football (Student Assistant), Football (Video), Men’s Basketball, Strength and Conditioning (Sport Science/Technology), Swimming, Volleyball (Technical Assistant), Women’s Soccer

Students will complete a contract detailing terms of the learning experience. The levels of coaching include but are not limited to elementary schools, little league, secondary schools, and collegiate levels. Please contact Dr. Michael Ryan with course specific questions.
