General Application Scholarship List

  • Underwood-Smith Teacher Education Scholarship

    The purpose of the program is to assist West Virginians interested in obtaining a teaching certificate and committed to the pursuit of a teaching career in West Virginia’s public schools. Due to limited funding, priority is given to junior, senior, and graduate students.

  • Peter and Linda Zulia Endowed Scholarship

    This award honors Peter and Linda Zulia.

    Requirements

    • Degree: undergraduate or graduate
    • GPA: 2.5

    Additional Notes

    • First preferences for applicant selection will go to Athletic Training majors.
    • A student who is a recipient one year is eligible for consideration in any other year providing they continue to meet the selection criteria.
  • Charles Peter Yost Physical Education Scholarship

    This scholarship award honors Charles Peter Yost

    Requirements

    • Degree: Undergraduate
    • Major: Available to all CPASS majors
    • Class: sophomore - senior
    • Residency: Must have graduated from a WV high school
    • GPA: 3.2
    • Involvement: The recipient must have demonstrated interests and participation in community services and campus organizations.
  • Bob and Jean Wilson Memorial Scholarship for CPASS

    This scholarship award honors Bob and Jean Wilson.

    Requirements

    • Degree: Full time Undergraduate
    • Major: Available to all Pre-majors and majors of CPASS
    • GPA: 2.5 or higher
    • Student must be female
    • Must show financial need

    • First preference will go to a student in the PETE program
  • William A. & Anna F. Shuman Scholarship

    This scholarship honors William and Anna Shuman. 

    Requirements

    • Degree: Undergraduate or Graduate
    • Major: Available to all CPASS majors
    • GPA: 2.5 or higher
    • Residency: Current or former resident of Preston Co, WV.

    Additional Notes

    • First preference will go to a female student who meets all requirements
  • John Semon Endowed Scholarship

    This scholarship award honors John Semon.

    Requirements

    • Degree: Undergraduate
    • Major: Physical Education and Kinesiology
    • GPA: 2.8 or higher
    • Class: freshman - senior undergraduates
    • Residency: Must be a West Virginia resident
    • Need: must show financial need
  • Kelly Irene Osleger Endowed Scholarship

    This scholarship award honors Kelly Irene Osleger.

    Requirements

    • Degree: Full time Undergraduate or Graduate
    • Major: Available to all CPASS majors
    • GPA: 2.5 or higher
    • Involvement: Recipient must demonstrate involvement in professional or community organizations

    Additional Notes

    • First preference will go to students studying in Physical Education or Athletic Training.
  • Old Pros Endowed Scholarship

    This award honors the WVU Old Pros.

    Requirements

    • Degree: Undergraduate
    • Major: Available to all CPASS majors
    • Academics: The recipient must be in good academic standing
    • Involvement: Must show evidence of professional and/or community service
  • Eleanor Lantz Scholarship

    This scholarship is awarded through the WVU Alumni Association in honor of Eleanor Lantz

    Requirements

    • Degree: Full time Undergraduate or Graduate
    • Major: Available to all Sport Sciences majors
    • GPA: 2.5 or higher
    • Residency: Student must be a WV resident
  • Bob and June Huggins Coaching Scholarship

    This scholarship award honors Bob and June Huggins

  • Robin L. Hayhurst Sports Management Scholarship

    This scholarship award honors Robin L. Hayhurst.

    Requirements

    • Degree: Full-time Undergraduate
    • Major: Available only to Sport Management majors
    • GPA: 2.5 or higher
    • Residency: Must be West Virginia resident
    • Must show financial need

    Additional Notes

    • First preference shall be for graduates of Hundred High School (WV) or Buckhannon-Upshur High School (WV) or their successor.
    • Must show a commitment and involvement in community youth sports organizations to receive this scholarship.
  • Robert Hayhurst Semper Fi Scholarship

    This scholarship award honors Robert Hayhurst

    Requirements

    • Degree: Undergraduate
    • Class: full-time Junior or Senior
    • GPA: 2.5 or higher
    • Location: must be a WV resident
    • Service: this scholarship will go to a student who has served in the U.S. Marine Corps

    • First preference for Sport Management major
    • Second preference for other CPASS majors
    • Available to all students at WVU
  • Hope Harper Loar Memorial Scholarship

    This scholarship honors Hope Harper Loar.

    • First preference will be given to residents of Pendleton county
    • Second preference will be given to residents of Hardy, Grant, or Pocahontas counties
  • Dr. Patricia K. Fehl Graduate Student Scholarship

    This scholarship award honors Dr. Patricia K. Fehl.

    Requirements

    • Degree: Graduate
    • Need: Recipient most show financial need

    Additional Notes

    • Priority given to a first year Doctoral student studying Coaching and Teaching Sciences
    • Second priority given to a Master's student studying Coaching or Physical Education
  • Kevin and Karen Elko Scholarship

    This award honors Kevin and Karen Elko.

    Requirements

    • Degree: Graduate
    • Major: Sport Management on-campus program
    • Involvement: Recipient must demonstrate a record of public and/or professional service in the Sport Management profession.
  • Doris Dorinzi Scholarship

    This scholarship honors Doris Dorinzi.

    Requirements

    • Degree: Undergraduate
    • Major: Physical Education and Kinesiology
    • GPA: 2.5 or higher

    • Need: Must show financial need
    • Residency: Student graduated from a WV High School
  • Louise Currence Christensen Endowed Scholarship

    This scholarship honors Louise Currence Christensen

    • Major: Available to all CPASS majors and pre-majors

    • Residency: First preference to students from Pocahontas Co, WV.
    • Involvement: First preference will go to a student involved in professional or community organizations

    This award honors Fred M. Coombs.

    • Need: Must show financial need

    • Recipients may seek renewal upon making normal progress towards degree requirements. 
    • Scholarship is not automatically renewed each year.  
  • Tom and Jan Cook Endowed Scholarship

    This scholarship award honors Tom and Jan Cook

  • Forrest G. Clark Presidential Scholarship

    This scholarship honors Forrest G. Clark

    • Major: Available to all CPASS majors
    • Residency: WV Resident
    • Academic: Student must meet all requirements of the WVU Scholars Program

    • Recipients are selected by program faculty from those deemed eligible.  No application is available for this scholarship
  • W.A. Carruth, M.J. Pearse & K.J. Blakemore Scholarship

    This award honors Wincie Ann Carruth, M.J. Pearse and Kittie.J. Blakemore.

    Requirements

    • Degree: Full-time undergraduate
    • Major: Available to all CPASS majors
    • GPA: 3.2 or higher
    • Need: Must demonstrate financial need

    • A student who is a recipient one year is eligible for consideration in any other year provided they continue to meet the selection critia.
  • Dr. Dana D. Brooks Scholarship

    This scholarship award honors Dana D. Brooks who retired as the Dean of CPASS in 2019.

    Requirements

    • Degree: Graduate
    • Level: Doctoral
    • Assistantship: Must hold a Graduate Teaching Assistantship
    • Involvement: Must show evidence of involvement in professional or community organizations

    Additional Notes

    • First preference goes to students majoring in Sport and Exercise Performance Psychology
    • Second preference goes to students majoring in Coaching and Teaching Studies
  • Marvin (Bucky) Bolyard Scholarship

    This scholarship award honors Marvin (Bucky) Bolyard.

    Requirements

    • Degree: Undergraduate
    • Major: Available to all CPASS majors and pre-majors
    • Residency: Current or former resident of Preston County
  • Ferris and Deanna Antoon Textbook Scholarship

    The award honors Ferris and Deanna Antoon and is intended solely for textbooks.

    Requirements

    • Degree: Undergraduate
    • Major: Available to all CPASS majors
    • Needs: recipient must demonstrate financial need
    • Academic: Recipient must demonstrate academic promise

    Additional Notes

    • Funds must be used by the recipient to purchase textbooks for their classes during the academic year the award is designated for.
  • Dr. Roger Alford Alumni Scholarship

    This scholarship award honors Dr. Roger Alford.

    Requirements

    • Major: Any CPASS undergraduate major
    • GPA: 2.5 or higher
    • Residency: Student must be a non-resident of WV
    • Need: Student must show financial need
    • Student must not be competing in intercollegiate athletic programs at WVU
  • Willie and Linda Akers Endowed Scholarship

    This scholarship award honors Willie and Linda Akers

    Requirements

    • Degree: Undergraduate
  • Hazel Anne Johnson Rehabilitation Counseling Scholarship

    Requirements

    • Degree: Graduate
    • Major: Clinical Rehabilitation and Mental Health Counseling
    • Need: Recipients must demonstrate financial need.

    • Recipients must be West Virginia natives.
  • Woodrow & Virginia Bonds Endowed Scholarship

    Requirements

    • Degree: Undergraduate, Graduate
  • Alex & Betty F. Schoenbaum Teacher Preparation Scholarship/Loan

    Requirements

    • Degree: Undergraduate, Graduate
    • Major: Recipients must be enrolled in a teacher education program

    Additional Notes

    • Recipients must have successfully completed the undergraduate supervised clinical experience in a West Virginia school and/or have one or more years of full-time teaching experience in a West Virginia school; demonstrated academic ability and intent to teach in West Virginia.
    • Recipients must agree to complete a degree in teacher education. If the recipient chooses not to complete the teaching degree the scholarship must be fully repaid.
  • Ann & Bob Orders STEM Teaching Scholarship

    Requirements

    • Degree: Undergraduate, Graduate
    • Major: Approved program of study leading to a science, technology, engineering or mathematics (STEM) degree program in teacher education.
    • GPA: Recipients must demonstrate high academic standing, as defined by WVU.
    • Residency: Recipients must be West Virginia residents.
  • Arland Imlay, PhD Scholarship

    Requirements

    • Degree: Undergraduate
    • Major: Elementary Education
    • GPA: Recipients must demonstrate academic promise.
  • Carole Diane Cook Elder Scholarship

    Requirements

    • Degree: Undergraduate, Graduate
    • Major: Recipients must be enrolled in a teacher education program.

    Additional Notes

    • Recipients must be West Virginia residents.
  • Carter Family Foundation Teacher Education Scholarship

    Requirements

    • Degree: Undergraduate
    • Major: Recipients must be enrolled in a teacher education program.
    • GPA: Recipients must demonstrate academic ability.
    • Need: Recipients must demonstrate financial need.

    Additional Notes

    • First consideration will be given to a student from Raleigh County, WV.
    • Second consideration to a student from the Southern part of West Virginia (McDowell, Mercer, Monroe, Summers and Wyoming Counties).
    • Third consideration will be given to a student from West Virginia.
  • Delmas Miller Endowed Scholarship

    Requirements

    • Degree: Undergraduate, Graduate
    • Major: Recipients must be enrolled in a teacher education program.

    Additional Notes

    • Preference will be given to secondary education majors.
  • Donna Hoylman Peduto Endowed Scholarship

    Requirements

    • Degree: Undergraduate, Graduate
    • Major: Recipients must be enrolled in a teacher education program.
    • Need: Recipient should be making satisfactory academic progress and demonstrate financial need as determined by the FAFSA and/or the WVU Office of Financial Aid.

    Additional Notes

    • First preference shall be for West Virginia residents.
  • Dr. Dianna M. Vargo Scholarship

    Requirements

    • Degree: Junior and Senior Undergraduates
    • Major: Recipients must be enrolled in a teacher education program.
    • GPA: Recipients shall maintain a GPA of 3.0.

    Additional Notes

    • First preference will be for students who are graduates of Wheeling Park High School in Ohio County, WV.
    • Second preference will be for graduates of John Marshall High School or Cameron High School in Marshall County, WV or for graduates of Ripley High School in Jackson County, WV.
    • If there is no eligible undergraduate student, graduate students may be considered from the above preferred high schools.
  • Drs. Catherine Perry and Donald R. Cotten CEHS Scholarship

    Requirements

    • Degree: Undergraduate, Graduate
    • Major: Bachelor of Arts in Elementary Education; Master of Arts in Certification, with emphasis in mathematics, sciences, or computer science/technology
    • GPA: Recipients shall have and maintain a 3.0 GPA.

    Additional Notes

    • First preference will be for citizens of the United States of America (as allowed by law and institutional policy) and students who are not a participant in any intercollegiate athletic program and/or the recipient of any athletic aid.
  • Eddie C. Kennedy Endowed Scholarship

  • Frontier WV Education Scholarship

    Requirements

    • Degree: Undergraduate
    • Major: Elementary Education
    • GPA: Recipients shall be making satisfactory academic progress as defined by the WVU Office of Financial Aid.
  • Harry B. & Dora Morgan Heflin Graduate Scholarship

    Requirements

    • Degree: Graduate
    • Major: The recipient may be working toward an advanced degree, pursuing additional areas of certification, or further developing knowledge in an existing area of expertise.

    Additional Notes

    • Preference will be given to any individual presently teaching in a public school in West Virginia.
  • Jill Clampitt Memorial Special Education Scholarship

    Requirements

    • Degree: Graduate
    • Major: Recipients must be enrolled in an elementary education or special education program.

    Additional Notes

    • First preference will be given to non-residents of West Virginia.
  • Jessee Frances Brown Lilly Scholarship Fund

    Requirements

    • Degree: Undergraduate, Graduate
    • GPA: 3.0 GPA or better

    • First preference given to freshman students majoring in education who have graduated from a Wyoming County high school.
    • Second preference shall be given to students of any class majoring in Education who are graduates of a Wyoming County high school.
    • Third preference shall be given to any students graduating from a Wyoming County high school.
  • Leon & Mae Newell McKown Scholarship

    Requirements

    • Major: Recipients must be enrolled in an education program.
    • GPA: Recipients must demonstrate academic promise.
    • Need: Recipients must demonstrate financial need.

    • First preference is given to students residing in Calhoun County, WV.
    • Second preference is given to any West Virginia Resident.
  • Mary Ault Groves Education Scholarship

    Requirements

    • Degree: Undergraduate
    • Major: Recipients must be enrolled in a teacher education program.
    • Need: Recipients must demonstrate financial need.

    Additional Notes

    • First preference will be for residents of Nicholas and/or Preston County, WV.
    • In the event that a student doesn't meet this criterion, then any undergraduate from another county in the State of West Virginia would be eligible for consideration and be able to apply for the scholarship.
  • Margaret B. Fitzgerald Education Scholarship

    Requirements

    • Degree: Undergraduate, Graduate
    • Major: Recipients must be enrolled in a teacher education program.

    Additional Notes

    • First preference is given to residents from Wood County, WV, followed by any resident of West Virginia.
  • Moore Family Endowed Scholarship

    Requirements

    • Degree: Undergraduate, Graduate
    • Major: Recipients must be enrolled in a teacher education program with the intent to teach in West Virginia.
    • GPA: Recipients must be in good academic standing as defined by WVU.

    Additional Notes

    • Students must be full-time status to receive this award.
  • William “Bill” Thomas McLaughlin II Education Scholarship

    • Major: Recipients must be enrolled in a teacher education program.

    • Preference is given to residents of West Virginia.
  • William C. Waters Scholarship

    Requirements

    • Major: Recipients must be enrolled in a teacher education program.
    • GPA: Recipients must demonstrate academic promise.
    • Need: Recipients must demonstrate financial need.

    Additional Notes

    • First preference is for graduates of Clay-Battelle High School in Monongalia County.
    • If there are no applicants available from Clay-Battelle High School, other students who are preparing to become teachers, and meet the stated criteria, may receive the scholarships.
  • William S. and Karen E. Bingman Endowed Education Scholarship

    • Major: Recipients must be enrolled in a teacher education program.

    • Preference is given to students transferring from Potomac State College.
  • Dr. Rogers McAvoy Educational Psychology Scholarship

    • Major: Educational Psychology; other learning sciences graduate programs
  • Jennifer Marie Baxter Memorial Scholarship
