Writing a Personal Statement

Your personal statement is your chance to show who you are and why you’re a great fit for a graduate program.

Types of statements

  • General: Freestyle essay, common for medical or law school applications.
  • Specific Questions: Many programs (business, grad school) ask targeted questions or multiple essays. Answer exactly what’s asked.

Questions to consider

  • What makes you unique or memorable?
  • Which experiences shaped your goals or interest in this field?
  • What have you learned from classes, work, or internships?
  • What are your career goals?
  • Any gaps, discrepancies, or challenges to explain?
  • Which skills or qualities make you a strong candidate?

Tips for success

  • Answer the question: Tailor each statement; don’t reuse the same essay for every school.
  • Tell a story: Use concrete experiences to show your strengths.
  • Be specific: Back up claims with examples.
  • Grab attention: Make your opening paragraph count.
  • Show knowledge: Highlight relevant classes, work, or research.
  • Do research: Explain why the program is a good fit.
  • Write well: Proofread carefully, follow word limits.
  • Avoid clichés & irrelevant topics: Skip high school achievements, overused statements, or controversial subjects.
