Debra Berkey
Debra Berkey was inducted into the College of Applied Human Sciences Hall of Fame in the fall of 2025. She was previously inducted into the College of Physical Activity and Sport Sciences Hall of Fame in 2007.
Berkey earned a master’s degree in physical education and motor development and a doctorate in professional preparation, pedagogy, and behavior analysis from West Virginia University.
She joined the faculty at Western Michigan University in 1985 and served for more than three decades in teaching, research, and leadership. She served as professor and chair of the Department of Health, Physical Education and Recreation, later renamed the Department of Human Performance and Health Education. Her teaching focused on instructional methods, curriculum, movement concepts, and motor development at both the undergraduate and graduate levels.
Berkey held numerous leadership positions with the Society of Health and Physical Educators (SHAPE America) and its Midwest region, as well as with the Michigan Association for Health, Physical Education, Recreation and Dance. She served on several national committees, including the Recognition Review Committee, Viability Criteria Committee, Financial Affairs Committee, and the Board of Governors. She also served as a reviewer for the Journal of Health, Physical Education, Recreation and Dance.
In 2018, Berkey received the Midwest Association for College and University Physical Education Scholar/Lecturer Award from SHAPE America, recognizing her contributions to teaching, scholarship, and professional service.
