Herman L. Moses
Herman Moses was inducted into the College of Applied Human Sciences Hall of Fame in the fall of 2025. He was previously inducted into the College of Physical Activity and Sport Sciences Hall of Fame in 1998.
A two-time graduate of West Virginia University, Moses earned his undergraduate degree in parks and recreation in 1965 and a master’s degree in counseling in 1969. As a student, he served as president of the WVU Professional Recreation Society. He began his professional career with a competitive internship through the National Recreation and Park Association in Philadelphia.
After completing his internship with the City of Philadelphia, Moses returned to WVU and began a 13-year tenure as Associate Director of Residence Halls.
In 1981, he transitioned to the Office of Student Life as Associate Dean. In that role, he was responsible for new student orientation, judicial programs, and staff development and training. He also taught the Orientation I course for first-year students, worked closely with city officials, and provided crisis counseling and support when student emergencies arose.
He was promoted to Dean of Students in 1987, where he supervised a range of departments and programs within the Office of Student Life. In 1995, he was appointed interim Vice President for Student Affairs and Dean of the Office of Student Affairs, overseeing all Student Affairs units, from Admissions and Records to Student Health Services. On May 5, 1997, he was officially named Dean and Associate Vice President of Student Affairs.
His honors include the Fanny Lou Hamer Award, the Distinguished Service Award from the West Virginia Association of Student Personnel Administrators, and honorary membership in the Golden Key National Honor Society. In recognition of his and his wife Kathryn’s impact, the Herman and Kathryn Moses Scholarship Awards were established to support WVU undergraduate and graduate students employed by the Division of Student Life.
