Joseph G. Marconi
Joseph Marconi was inducted into the inaugural College of Applied Human Sciences Hall of Fame in the fall of 2025. He was previously inducted into the College of Physical Activity and Sport Sciences Hall of Fame in 1995.
A native of Fredericktown, Pa., Marconi transferred to WVU from the University of Maryland and became a standout running back for the Mountaineer football program. He rushed for 998 yards on 181 carries (5.5 avg.) and scored 18 touchdowns over his collegiate career. Marconi was part of the 1954 Sugar Bowl team and contributed to WVU’s 31-7 record during his tenure, including a 30-game Southern Conference winning streak. His top performance came against NC State in 1953, rushing for 118 yards on just 11 carries. He earned a bachelor’s degree in physical education with a minor in industrial arts.
A first-round pick of the Los Angeles Rams in the 1956 NFL Draft, Marconi played six seasons with the Rams, amassing 1,769 rushing yards and 21 touchdowns. He was later traded to the Chicago Bears, where he played five more seasons and helped the team capture the 1963 NFL Championship. He was named to the Pro Bowl in 1964 and retired with 2,771 rushing yards, 30 rushing touchdowns, 136 receptions, and nine receiving touchdowns over an 11-year professional career.
Following football, Marconi worked in the steel industry. He was inducted into the WVU Sports Hall of Fame in 1993. He was a founding member of the WVU Letterman’s Club and played a key role in athletic fundraising efforts. He was also active in several Chicago-area charities alongside longtime friend Mike Ditka.
Marconi passed away in 1992.
