Beatrice Hurst
Beatrice Hurst was inducted into the inaugural College of Applied Human Sciences Hall of Fame in 2025. She was previously inducted into the College of Physical Activity and Sport Sciences Hall of Fame in 1991.
Born in 1901 in Utah, Hurst graduated from high school in 1919 and attended the University of Utah. She then began her teaching career, and in 1928, she was invited by Grace Griffin to join the initial faculty of what would become the School of Physical Education at West Virginia University.
Hurst taught for 38 years at WVU, offering courses in adaptive physical education, folk and international dance, and first aid. She was also involved in the Morgantown community, particularly through the American National Red Cross. Known as a conscientious instructor and formed strong bonds with students. A champion of both the performing and creative arts, Hurst regularly attended concerts and performances at Eiesland Hall and was known for her knowledge of folk dance.
Hurst passed away in 1999 at the age of 98.
