Biographical Sketch

Dr. John P. Campbell is an associate professor of higher education administration in the School of Education at West Virginia University. John teaches courses within the Higher Education Administration Program. Prior to joining the Higher Education Administration program, John served as Vice Provost at West Virginia University. In this role, he provided strategic and operational direction across the three campuses. John has served in several administrative roles including the Associate Provost for Information Technology and Chief Information Officer at WVU. In this role, John was responsible for providing institution-wide leadership to the University’s technology infrastructure. John’s efforts focus on leading the institution’s strategic and resource planning as well as service delivery. Prior to his appointment at WVU, he was the Associate Vice President for Academic Technologies at Purdue University. His responsibilities focused on the support, empowerment, and enhancement of faculty efforts in research and teaching/learning. He also worked at Pennsylvania State University.His research interests include student access and success, data mining and analytics, early identification of at-risk students, and college affordability. During the twenty years, John has examined methods to use academic analytics to identify students at risk within courses. He was the founder of the Signals project which has been featured on NBC and in The Chronicle of Higher Education. The Signals project has also been awarded the 2012 Noel-Levitz Retention Award, the 2011 Digital Educational Achievement Award and the 2011 Campus Technology Innovators Award for Teaching and Learning.

John has over 25 publications focused on information technology, analytics, and learning design. During the past 30 years, Dr. Campbell has presented in over 100 national and international conferences including over 40 invited presentations. Of those presentations, nearly half have focused on use of analytics to improve student success, 50 on the design of learning environments, and the remaining on the development and support of campus cyberinfrastructure. Dr. Campbell has participated in approximately $20M in externally funded projects. Most of the funded projects have focused on the development and support of new cyberinfrastructure for the campus community. Additional efforts include the development of analytics solutions to improve learning and the application of learning design and technology to the instructional environment.

His courses include Student Development, Student Success in Higher Education, Development of Student Success Programs, Student Support Systems, Leading Change in Student Support Programs and Foundations of Academic Advising. John was awarded the 2021-2022 College Teaching Award and a 2022-2023 Teaching and Learning Commons Faculty Associate.
