Steven Cole
2014 Hall of Fame Inductee
Steven Cole was inducted into the inaugural College of Applied Human Sciences Hall of Fame in the fall of 2025. He was previously inducted into the College of Physical Activity and Sport Sciences Hall of Fame in 2014.
Cole earned a Bachelor of Science in Physical Education with a concentration in athletic training from West Virginia University in 1976 and a Master of Education in Sports Medicine with a concentration in athletic training from the University of Virginia in 1978.
Cole spent more than four decades in athletic health care and collegiate athletics administration. At William & Mary, he led the sports medicine program for 26 years as director of sports medicine before assuming responsibility for department operations as associate athletic director.
His academic and clinical roles have included serving as an affiliated clinical site coordinator for the Riverside Family Medicine Residency in Newport News and as a clinical instructor for the post-professional Athletic Training Program at Old Dominion University. Through Cole Consultant Services, Inc., he has advised athletic programs, medical practices, and corporate clients and is approved by the Board of Certification as a continuing education provider. He co-developed the SMART (Sideline Management Assessment Response Techniques) workshop for primary care physicians and authored companion resources used to support on-field injury management. He is also recognized for expertise in preparing athletic training students for national certification (ACES Preparatory Workshop) and in the administration of athletic injury insurance programs.
Additionally, Cole coordinated the Performing Arts Sports Medicine program for Busch Entertainment Corporation in Williamsburg, Va., and has served as an athletic trainer within Riverside Health System’s sports medicine outreach, including work with Bruton High School.
His professional recognition includes induction into the Virginia Athletic Trainers’ Association and Mid-Atlantic Athletic Trainers’ Association halls of fame, the NATA Service Award, and recognition as a Most Distinguished Athletic Trainer. He has held leadership roles with the Mid-Atlantic Athletic Trainers’ Association and on the District 3 NATA Political Action Committee board.
