Steve Douglas

Stephen L. Douglas was inducted into the inaugural College of Applied Human Sciences Hall of Fame in the fall of 2025. He was previously a member of the College of Physical Activity and Sport Sciences Hall of Fame (1999) and was recognized as an Outstanding Alumnus in 2012.

A native of Clarksburg, W.Va., Douglas was born on Oct. 6, 1952, and graduated from Roosevelt-Wilson High School. He earned a Bachelor of Science degree in journalism from West Virginia University in 1974 and a Master of Science degree in physical education in 1979.

Douglas began his professional career in public information at Alderson-Broaddus College and later served as Director of College Relations at West Virginia Wesleyan College. In 1982, he returned to WVU as Associate Director of the Alumni Association and, in 1988, was named Chief Executive Officer and Executive Director—becoming only the seventh person to hold that position since the organization’s founding. He led the Alumni Association for 27 years, expanding programming, increasing assets, retiring the Alumni Center mortgage, and advancing technology across alumni engagement strategies.

He was an active member of the WVU President’s Cabinet and contributed to numerous university and civic organizations, including the Salvation Army Board of Advisors, Morgantown Rotary Club, West Virginia Alumni Directors Association, and Kiwanis International. His honors included Distinguished West Virginian, the Most Loyal Mountaineer Spirit Award, and multiple national recognitions for leadership in education and service.

Douglas passed away in May 2016 at the age of 63.
