Lynn Housner
Lynn Housner received the College of Physical Activity and Sport Sciences Distinguished Service Award in 2015 in recognition of his leadership and contributions to physical education teacher education.
Housner earned a Bachelor of Science degree from the University of Virginia and master’s and doctoral degrees from the University of Pittsburgh. While in graduate school, he taught physical education for preschool through eighth grade at Falk Laboratory School.
After completing his doctorate, Housner served on the faculty at the University of Texas (1981–84) and New Mexico State University (1984–94). At WVU, he joined the faculty in 1994 and served as associate dean of CPASS until 2013. He was later named professor emeritus.
Throughout his career, Housner held leadership positions with professional organizations including the New Mexico Association of Health, Physical Education, Recreation and Dance, the Southwest District of AAHPERD, the Curriculum and Instruction Academy of AAHPERD, and the West Virginia Association of Health, Physical Education, Recreation and Dance (WVAHPERD), where he served as vice president for Higher Education and president in 2011.
His recognitions include the WVAHPERD Honor Award (2006), Scholar Award (2008), and Ray O. Duncan Award (2013), the Southwest AHPERD Scholar Award (1994–95), and the AAHPERD National Teacher Educator and Curriculum and Instruction Honor Awards (2012). In 2003, he was selected as a member of the American Academy of Kinesiology and Physical Education.
Housner contributed extensively to professional service through more than 45 workshops for teachers, mentorship in the West Virginia Health and Physical Education Leadership Academy, and national accreditation work with NCATE. He also helped establish the American Educational Research Association’s Special Interest Group on Research on Learning and Instruction in Physical Education, serving as its first chair from 1986 to 1988. His research on teacher and coach cognition and physical education pedagogy has been published widely at state, regional, national, and international levels.
