Biographical Sketch

Johnna Bolyard, PhD, is an associate professor of mathematics education in the School of Education. She teaches mathematics content and methods courses in the Bachelor of Arts in Elementary Education program and graduate courses in the Masters of Arts in the Elementary Mathematics Specialist program and the PhD in Educational Theory and Practice program. Prior to joining WVU, Dr. Bolyard was a research assistant professor at George Mason University. Before working in higher education, Dr. Bolyard was a teacher and the district K-12 Mathematics Specialist in Loudoun County, Virginia.

Dr. Bolyard’s research interests include the development of elementary mathematics teachers’ knowledge and skills for developing equitable and inclusive teaching practices, the work and preparation of and mathematics teacher leaders, and developing design-based teaching practices that integrate engineering, science, and mathematics. She has published articles in a range of professional journals, including the Journal for Research in Mathematics Education, Professional Development in Education, Journal of Mathematical Behavior, Investigations in Mathematics Learning, and the Journal of Computers in Mathematics and Science Teaching. Dr. Bolyard has engaged in professional service as a member of the Association of Mathematics Teacher Educators (AMTE) Professional Development Committee (2020-2023), a grant proposal reviewer for the National Science Foundation, a proposal reviewer for the annual meetings of the American Educational Research Association (AERA) and AMTE, and a manuscript reviewer for several journals.

Dr. Bolyard received a PhD, Education, from George Mason University, a MEd, in Secondary Mathematics, West Virginia University, and a BA, International Studies and History, West Virginia University.
