Biographical Sketch

Dr. Sarah Selmer is an associate professor of mathematics education in the Department of Curriculum and Instruction at WVU. More recently, Dr. Selmer had the opportunity to live in Stellenbosch, South Africa where she participated in a sabbatical with a colleague at the University of Stellenbosch. Dr. Selmer is a current Fulbright Specialist where she pursues her interests in mathematics education through international collaborations.

Dr. Selmer’s teaching interests focus on the development of elementary and middle grade mathematics teachers. Her research interests include elementary teachers’ noticing and sensemaking of students’ mathematical thinking, the development of responsive teaching practices and the study of practice-based teacher education.

Following earning her undergraduate degree in finance at the University of Oregon, Dr. Selmer was a Peace Corps Volunteer in the country of Mauritania. After her service in the Peace Corps, she pursued a master’s degree from Oregon State University and was licensed to teach high school mathematics and computer science in the state of Oregon. She taught in a high school setting for nine years prior to moving to West Virginia where she pursued her doctorate in curriculum and instruction.
